The Commonwealth Fund

Animated Healthcare Stories

Challenge

The Commonwealth Fund (TCF) wanted to address three significant healthcare issues in the United States in a way that was easily digestable for audiences: women’s health, affordability, and racial inequities. RF Studio53 was tasked with creating three animations, aimed to explain the complexities of these issues and propose potential solutions without taking a political stance. This presented a dual challenge: first, effectively communicating sensitive and polarizing topics while maintaining an apolitical tone; second, visualizing abstract concepts through graphic design in a way that was both engaging and educational.

RF Studio53 led the project from concept to delivery, crafting unbiased scripts and a cohesive visual style to engage healthcare policymakers. We developed detailed storyboards and recorded voiceovers with influencers including Jamila Michener, Utibe Essien, and Suchin Pak. Our animation team brought each topic to life with a clear, compelling style and produced platform-ready assets for broad distribution.

Women's Health Animation

TCF discusses the systemic challenges women in the U.S. face in accessing healthcare, particularly primary, mental, and maternal care. It highlights disparities, especially for women of color, while providing solutions and advocating for equitable healthcare as essential to societal wellbeing.

Healthcare Affordability Animation

In this film, TCF highlights the high cost of healthcare in the United States and its poor health outcomes. Despite leading in medical innovation, the country struggles with healthcare access due to the lack of universal coverage and high prices for medical goods and services.

Anti-Racist Policies Animation

TCF discusses the impact of policy choices on healthcare, emphasizing the benefits of anti-racist policies like Medicaid expansion. It highlights how such policies improve access to healthcare, reduce mortality, and lower medical debt, particularly for people of color, ultimately promoting racial equity in the healthcare system.

Results

The highlight of this project was our ability to use animation creatively to inform audiences about pressing healthcare issues. The animations were well-received for their engaging and informative style, successfully balancing clarity with sensitivity. By leveraging the voices of influential figures, we added a layer of authenticity and relevance to each animation.

The project demonstrated our capacity to navigate complex topics to deliver a polished final product.
